  • Day 1: Cusco – Cusipata – Llacto – Rainbow Mt – Llacto – Cusco

Your amazing Rainbow Mountain + 7 Lakes Trek adventure begins with a pick up from your hotel at 5am. We set out on our drive for 3 hours through the South Valley, on our way to the trailhead at Llacto (4,638m/15,216 ft).  Along the way, there are amazing views of Inca terraces, traditional villages, valleys, and high snow covered Andean peaks.

The herds of alpacas and llamas near your breakfast place will entertain you in the early morning while you eat your delicious and hearty breakfast. We start on our hike at the trailhead where we  follow a lovely stream, with views of the Ausangate Mountain and glaciers.  As you are trekking take the opportunity to interact with the local people. Ask your guide to share about their traditional clothing and the significance of the different hats worn by the men and women. Hopefully he will teach you a few words of Quechua!

After hiking uphill for about 1.5 hours, we finally reach our destination: the Rainbow Mountain! (5,020m/16,466ft). After admiring the unique beauty of this colorful landscape, you will have time to explore the area. You can take pictures or just soak up the view. We will spend approximately 30 minutes at the top. Afterwards, we hike across to the top of the Red Valley which takes about 45 minutes. Take time to explore and enjoy this amazing place.  The walk back takes another 45 minutes to an hour to get back to the trailhead.

At this point, we hike back down the way we came. The return hike takes about 1 hour. Then we enjoy a hearty lunch which was prepared by our chef while we were hiking.

Afterwards, we embark on the 2-hour drive on the way to Pacchanta where we will camp right next to the hot springs.

**** There is an option to rent a horse from local people right at the starting point of the trek up Rainbow Mountain.

porters inca trail

Our Porters

Our porters personify hard work. We employ about 90 porters from local communities. They are mostly farmers by trade and are native Quechua speakers. They mainly come from the indigenous communities around the trail. We refer to our super porters as ¨Red Machine¨. This is because they work hard during the treks but carrying duffel bags, camping gear, and more! It is important to us that we employ porters from local villages because we are supporting them to become self-efficient and helping communities grow their economy to better the quality of lives.

We provide the following items to our porters and cooks for free: Working insurance, Jacket, sun hat, warm hat, t-shirt, pants, hiking boots, comfortable duffle bags, canteen, girdle for protecting their spine, sleeping bags, mattress.

Our porters are what make everything look seamless and smooth. They have your tent ready before your arrival in your tent and most importantly they significantly lighten that camping gear load.
