As part of the sacred valley of the Incas, Moray is one of the archaeological centers that the Inca empire left us and that survive to this day. Probably built between 1438 and 1533, this fascinating archaeological center shows us the high level of technical and agricultural management reached by this people.

Moray Location

Moray is 50km (31m) northwest of Cusco. It’s on high-altitude plateau at elevation of 11 500ft/ 3 500m above sea level. It forms part of the sacred valley of the Incas, just a short distance from Chinchero and Maras Salt Mines. When you do a Sacred Valley tour, it very likely that Moray will be included.

Why Moray

Moray is an excavated Inca site, its history, construction and use makes it a fascinating site and worth a visit. The site looks like an open pit mine or an alien landing site. It’s composed of three groups of circular terraces that descend 490ft/ 150m from the highest terrace to the lowest. Its design and depth create variable temperatures and there is also evidence that the Incas imported soil from other regions of Peru. Therefore, you get to witness an agricultural experimentation program that was very sophisticated for its time. Explore a very complex irrigation system, a water source at the top of the mountains feeds water through different channels to the different levels of terraces below. The site is usually referred to as the Greenhouse of the Incas, because like a modern greenhouse, the different levels create micro climates that make it possible to study how crops grow in different conditions.
